One of our recent projects involved a beautiful Grade II listed property near Chipping Norton featuring an extensive traditional walled garden.
The homeowners wanted to enjoy the garden during summer evenings while preserving its character and tranquillity. The challenge was to create subtle lighting that enhanced the mature planting and historic stone walls without appearing overly modern or intrusive.
Our solution included:
Discreet uplighting to highlight specimen trees and climbing plants
Warm LED wall lighting to accentuate the honey-coloured Cotswold stone
Low-level pathway lighting throughout the garden
Feature lighting around a central water fountain
Smart controls allowing different lighting scenes for entertaining and everyday use
The result was a beautifully illuminated garden that retained its natural charm while becoming a stunning extension of the home after sunset. The lighting created depth, atmosphere and usability, allowing the family to enjoy the space throughout the summer months and beyond.

Top Tips for Planning Outdoor Lighting
1. Start with How You Use the Space
Think about how you spend time outdoors. Do you entertain regularly, enjoy dining outside, or simply want to improve security and access?
2. Layer Your Lighting
The most effective schemes combine several lighting types, including feature, pathway, architectural and ambient lighting.
3. Highlight Key Features
Choose focal points such as mature trees, stone walls, water features or planting beds to create visual interest.
4. Avoid Over-Lighting
Less is often more. Carefully positioned lighting creates a more sophisticated and natural effect than flooding an area with bright light.
5. Choose Warm White LEDs
Warm white lighting complements traditional Cotswold stone and creates a welcoming atmosphere.
6. Consider Smart Controls
Timers, sensors and smartphone-controlled systems can improve convenience and energy efficiency.
7. Plan for Future Expansion
Consider additional features you may wish to add later and ensure your electrical infrastructure can accommodate future upgrades.
